In October of 2004, Rebecca Westcott was a 28 year old artist just hitting her stride. She had recently been awarded the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts for her honest and pared down portraits of twenty something peers and friends. She was one of its youngest recipients to date. The exhibition, “Portraiture Now: Communities” at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, is the first exhibition of her work since her untimely death that year. Westcott worked from photographs of her subject, combining elements from many different shots. She also painted her other homey interests -- plants, recipes, old lettering and vintage labels. Her preliminary drawings remain visible as she sketched them directly on the work’s surface with red under paint. It wasn’t her inclination to pretty things up; as a result her paintings are admired for their blunt beauty. Her work has been in solo exhibitions at SPECTOR, 1Pixel and Space 1026 in Philadelphia; and in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, New Image Art in Los Angeles, 111 Minna in San Francisco, White Columns and Diesel Gallery in New York, and the Virginia Beach Contemporary Art Center. Westcott received her bachelor's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. She also attended the Pont-Aven School of Art, in France. |
